Every Town Has a Storyteller: Why We Should Listen
The memories and perspectives that help a community understand itself.
Ask ten people what makes their hometown special and you may hear ten different answers. One remembers a teacher who changed a life. Another recalls the grocery store where everyone stopped to talk. Someone else describes moving into the area and finding an unexpected sense of belonging. Together, these memories reveal a place no official map can capture.
Personal history is community history
Photographs of old storefronts and records of historic buildings tell one part of a town’s story. The people who worked in those places, raised families nearby, or watched a street change over decades can add human detail. Their recollections may not settle every historical question, but they can show why particular moments mattered.
Oral history deserves careful treatment. Memories should be presented as personal recollections, with dates and factual claims checked against records when possible. A strong interview also leaves room for uncertainty and for more than one perspective.
The region is bigger than any single narrative
Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia contain longtime residents, recent arrivals, creative workers, small-business owners, and families with ties to many parts of the world. Their experiences need not be identical to belong in the same conversation.
A community publication can help by seeking out voices across generations and backgrounds, without expecting one person to speak for an entire group. The most rewarding questions are often simple: What brought you here? What do you wish people understood about this place? What would you like to see preserved or improved?

We welcome suggestions for future profiles and podcast guests. The goal is not to manufacture heroes or sentimental anecdotes; it is to create space for authentic voices and the stories that deserve to be heard.
