October 12, 2021 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

It’s time to get organized, and get our different groups together under a cooperative game-plan. First, here is a FAQ sheet. Make copies. Share it. The information has been vetted by several folks with academic backgrounds in ecology, chemistry, and environmental engineering.

Second, come to the meeting at the YWCA on Tuesday, October 12 at 7pm. Our agenda will be to have some presentations from community members about what is going on. We will also entertain some options we can exercise as members of the community.

Footnotes
1 For example, there is a Facebook group dedicated to sharing the experiences of the community entitled “Bristol City-VA/TN Air

Pollution Community Page.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/904106530399037 . See also https://wcyb.com/news/local/crews-

2
It is not on the National List of Priorities (NPL), but is designated as a superfund site that is non-time critical. ID# VAN000305700,
https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/CurSites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0305700 .
3 We know these gases are present because the VADEQ required Ingenco to test the gases being burned from the landfill. See
Enthalpy Analytical’s December 18, 2020 test, Laboratory ID 20L008.
4 For example, Methyl and Ethyl Mercaptan prolonged exposure levels are set by NIOSH at 500 ppb https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/
npg/npgd0280.html . Dimethyl sulfide prolonged exposure levels are set at 100 ppb https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/npgd0229.
html. Sulphur Dioxide prolonged exposure (10 hours) levels are set at 2 ppm https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/npgd0575.html .
5 https://www.bristolva.org/DocumentCenter/View/3342/07-27-21-Bristol-Air-Fact-Sheet-Update-2 . While the EPA did test for H2S,
they did not test for these other compounds using the more critical methods used to determine if hazardous air pollutants were
present. The EPA did indicate that “bump” testing was used to identify methyl mercaptan at a handful of sites. This method was not
rigorously employed, and is not as stringent as other methods. Sulphur Dioxide testing did not occur.

For example, the “safe” threshold for a 15-minute exposure to Benzene is 16 mg/m3, while NIOSH has set the “Action Level” on

Benzene at 1.6 mg/m3 on an 8-hour, time-weighted average https://www.thermofisher.com/blog/identifying-threats/benzene-
more-than-a-bad-hydrocarbon/ . See also, https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/idlh/71432.html .
